Despite taking a few years to get it off the ground, Warner Bros. seems to have a clear direction for their DC shared movie universe, nicknamed the DC Extended Universe by Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder.
With a number of superheroes coming into the fold in that film, the obvious next step would be to see them come together a la The Avengers. Indeed, WB plans to continue its world-expanding efforts in Batman v Superman with Justice League. But that is only the core of the DC Extended Universe, with various solo films and sequels planned down the line. One common characteristic shared by all of these films is their tone, or as Warner Bros. Entertainment CEO Kevin Tsujihara put it, the fact that they are “a little bit edgier” when compared to the current crop of superhero flicks.
However, it seems the studio will shift gears for an upcoming project that will presumably be a bit lighter in tone. As reported by The Tracking Board, Warner Bros. is now developing a Booster Gold and Blue Beetle team-up film, described as “a superhero buddy cop movie.” Greg Berlanti, who has previously worked on a number of DC TV series — including Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow — will both direct and executive produce the project. In addition, a later report from Heroic Hollywood claims that Zak Penn — screenwriter for films like X-Men: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk — is being courted to write the screenplay.
Whereas a good portion of DC’s films have been more serious, it seems the Booster Gold/Blue Beetle movie will be lighter and more comedic, playing off of the interesting contrasts and similarities in the characters’ personalities. In the comics, Booster Gold was a 25th century football player who ruined his reputation after gambling on his own games. Following that disgrace, Booster used special relics to transport himself back in time to become a famous superhero. Initially self-centered and arrogant, Booster Gold eventually became an actual superhero with good intentions.
Blue Beetle, on the other hand, was originally the superhero alias of Dan Garret, a professor who passes on his title to his student Ted Kord, who lacks the superpowers possessed by Garret. Consequently, Kord must find crafty ways to compensate, such as through gadgets and other various inventions. As a pair, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle have a long history of working together in the comics, with the dynamic between the two often being the driving force of the story.
Not only that, but Booster Gold and Blue Beetle also have a history of teaming up with the Justice League, which is handy, since the report also mentions the studio has plans to put the characters in an upcoming Justice League film. Perhaps they can help bring some comedic relief to the team, one element DC films have lacked in the past.
