Dope producer Chris Stylez AKA Stylez Tha Shadowfigure has been kind enough to bless us with an exclusive interview.
First and foremost I would like to thank him for clearing some time for us in his busy schedule.
Check out some of his ill beats before reading the interview
then there's this new REMIX we posted about earlier today
PURE DOPENESS!
Now on to the interview ...
Where are you from and how long have you been making beats?
I'm originally from Norwich NY but have been living in Utica NY for over 20 years and consider Utica my home town.
How did you get into producing?
When i was about 5 i wanted to learn to break dance but the older kids wouldnt let me so i figured if i couldnt dance to the music i would create the music. I got my first little yamaha keyboard when i was 7 but didnt get serious about producing until i was 17.
Would you say you have a signature style?
I make boom bap but i feel like my drum programming makes me stand out amoungst the crowd. You can tell my production when you hear it, I pride myself on that.
What would you say is the album from your catalogue that best represents you?
my full length production album from 2013 Sign Of The Times. I think i've gotten better since then but it took me almost 8 years to complete so i had plenty of time to mold and sculpt every sound to my vision. It's also my biggest release and biggest selling album so far.
What equipment do you prefer working with? has this changed a lot over the years?
It's changed alot over the years even though i basically use the same things. When i first started i made sample free beats with two keyboards, a module and a drum machine. But as the years went on and i used more and more sampling and found my sound i actually removed the sounds from my equipment and program each sound now on the PC. I wouldnt give any producers the advice to make beats the way i do but i do encourage them to find what works for them and use it.
What do you feel has been your best collabo so far?
Well i have a few really big collabs in the works now, and have done tracks that have featured Capone from CNN, Craig G, Hell Razah from Sunz Of Man and recently did a remix that featured Inspectah Deck. I also produced most of the tracks and was exe. producer of Fes Taylor's Pay Me In Respect album which led to us doing an EP together. But i would say my best and favorite collab was with Solomon Childs. The first tracks i ever did with him were in 2008 "Get That Money" which ended up on my Sign Of The Times album and "What You Used To Be" which was meant for his Wu Music Group album titled Castleton Ave. "What You Used To Be" ended up getting spins by DJ Kay Slay on Shade45 and really opened the door for bigger opportunities even though it was left off the retail album for sample clearance issues.
Any artists you would like to work with in the future?
I was supposed to of had a track with Tragedy Khadafi i would love for that to still happen. Inspectah Deck was on the list until recently. Only ones left on my short bucket list are Masta Killa and Styles P. I've been blessed to work with alot of my favorite artists.
Is there one particular artist whom you would like to do a joint album with?
I think a full album of me and Solomon would be really dope. I also think Masta Killa would be perfect on my production. I would say Hanz On but thats kind of already in the works.
Are you working on a new project? If so, what can you tell us about it?
I'm doing a collab album with an artist by the name of Rated R titled "Bars Of Brutality" it features Solomon Childs, Godilla, Odoub and a bunch of other good artists. I'm also working on an album titled "Blood On My Hands" starring Hanz On from "Meth Lab" fame. Also working on a EP with two artists Mordecai and Ron Donson dropping this winter titled "Def By Design".
Who are your top 3 producers?
1) DJ Premier
2) El-P/ Timbaland
3) 4th Disciple
Who are your top 3 lyricists?
1) Tragedy Khadafi
2) Inspectah Deck
3) Masta Killa
Is there any music besides hiphop that inspires you? any music you'd recommend people to listen to with an open mind?
My nephew got me into dubstep, not the mainstream stuff the underground punch people in the face dubstep. I dunno what Portishead and Massive Attack count as but they have albums that were huge influences to me. If i listen to R&B or singing its got to be powerful and get me in my feelings. Also one of my favorite tracks ever is "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails, i think every teen who is bullied or is unhappy with life should listen to that song with headphones on at full blast.
How can fans follow up on your output?
on Facebook I'm Styles Smith for my personal site my music site is under Stylez Tha Shadow Figure, my twitter is @thashadowfigure and instagram is chrisstylezt1p
How can artists get in touch with you?
Any of my social media inboxes but my personal facebook would be the quickest reply. Also for music videos artists can e-mail BillyOakFilms@gmail.com.
I would also like to shout out everyone who has stuck with me through the push backs the label moves and everything that i've dealt with. Kollision, Rated R, Suezar, Ty Da Tyrant, Doc Stewart, Mizery, Solomon Childs, Hanz On, Empuls, Ron Donson, Poet On Drugs, Wise King (one of my favorite emcees), Tha God Sin, Ghetalion (taught me how to produce), Fes Taylor (my twin brother). Theres so many who have looked out im leaving off about 50 people who have helped me. If you have looked out i didnt forget theres just too many, thank you. And thanks for the interview i appreciate it.
